What is a Natural Helper?
We are seeking the super do-ers who are the backbone of our community. The program is designed to break down barriers to resources and provide connections for people who may not consider themselves “leaders” yet.
Natural Helpers connect community members to resources such as: finding a doctor, enrolling children in school, learning about ethnic food stores, childcare resources, job opportunities, legal services, transportation, housing, etc. They have expertise typically from their own experience and deep connections within the community and are already organically working as a go-to for many of their community’s needs and questions. They serve a resource that allows Portland to continue its efforts in fostering a sense of inclusion in all aspects of city life.
Are you helping community members and feel overwhelmed? This program can help you by gaining training, tools, and resources while recognizing your informal leadership.
Overview of the Program
"Natural Helpers" is a nationwide program designed to bridge the gap between residents and the resources available to them by identifying, training and empowering local community members who understand the challenges of moving to a different place, learning a new language, existing within a dominant culture, and/or establishing a home in the U.S.
In February 2020, The Office of Economic Opportunity (OEO) launched its inaugural "Natural Helpers Leadership Program" to connect community members to resources and opportunities to foster a greater sense of belonging in all aspects of life in Portland. The program is recurring on an annual basis, with the recruitment generally beginning in early Fall.
