Beginner: The organization recognizes racial inequity is one of the most pressing and pervasive issues in our society and is seeking to really delve into diversity & inclusion work and promoting racial equity. The organization has the interest, passion, and drive to begin this work, but has not formally begun this process. First steps include evaluating your workplace culture through surveys, data collection, etc. Workplace culture must foster a sense of belonging and psychological safety. Creating a diversity and inclusion statement or initiative with a public statement simply isn't enough. Once a vision for the culture is set, the culture must be implemented. Note that while you may not label your organization as a "beginner" in this area of work, overestimating one's efficiency in this realm is common. We encourage everyone to read through these resources to ensure that they are past this stage. Your workplace may feel welcoming and safe to you and other colleagues--but for WHOM is it welcoming? Does it feel welcoming to everyone regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, etc.? Does it feel welcoming to everyone because the workforce is rather homogenous? Who is missing at the table who can help determine the inclusiveness of your organization's workplace culture?
